Gregory, Wagy set IWC records in digs, blocks

MOUNT PLEASANT - Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball players Dana Gregory (a senior from West Point) and B.J. Wagy (freshman, Cedar Rapids) recently made their marks in the school's record books by setting single-season records for digs and solo blocks in a season, respectively.

Gregory, the Tigers' libero, set a school mark for digs in a season with her third dig in last Friday's match against Trinity International University. The dig was Gregory's 619th of the season, breaking the record of 618 formerly held by Jessenia Uceda in 2004.

Gregory set the record in just 105 games, while Uceda's record came over 126 games played in 2004. Gregory is also on pace to smash Uceda's school record of 4.90 digs per game in 2004, as the senior currently is averaging 5.68 digs per game, leading the Midwest Collegiate Conference. She currently has 670 digs for the season.

Also breaking a school record this past weekend during the MCC/CCAC Crossover Challenge in Davenport was freshman middle hitter Wagy, who recorded her 110th solo block of the year on Saturday against Illinois Institute of Technology. The block broke the old school single-season mark of 109 set by Stacy Ticknor in 2000 in 126 games.

Wagy broke the record in 114 games and currently has 116 blocks on the season with at least two more matches to play. Her average of 1.34 blocks per game leads the MCC but is well off the season record of 2.05 bpg set by Ticknor in 2000.

The Tigers finished their regular season Wednesday, losing a conference match in Forest City against Waldorf College 3-0. IWC will then begin the first round of MCC tournament play on Saturday against an opponent yet to be determined.
