Anna Lou Bondurant Chaney

Anna Lou Bondurant Chaney, 102, of Colusa died Monday, Nov. 12, 2007 in the home of her son, Benny Marvin and Sunny Chaney in Kingsport, Tenn.

She was born July 1, 1905 in Lewis County, Mo. She was the fourth of six daughters born to Emmett Marvin Bondurant and Lucinda Virginia Throckmorton Bondurant. On March 31, 1928 she married Cecil F. Chaney in Marshall, Mo. He preceded her in death on July 5, 1991.

She attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo. In 1926 she began a teaching career in Longwood, Mo. Shortly thereafter, she met Cecil Franklin Chaney and they were married March 31, 1928 in Marshall, Mo. She later received her degree from Illinois State University. Throughout her 31-year career in the classroom, Anna Lou also taught in Harrisburg, Mo., Colusa and Farmer City, Ill. and Fort Madison. She took time off from teaching from 1933 to 1945 to raise her family.

She is survived by two sons, Gary Cecil (wife Grace) Chaney of Northbrook, Ill. and Benny Marvin (wife Sunny) Chaney of Kingsport, Tenn. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Michele (husband Timothy) McConnell of Monona, Wisc., Melody Elam of Kingsport, Tenn., Stanton Chaney of Johnson City, Tenn., Holly (husband Les) Evans of Lawrenceville, Ga., Gary Cecil Chaney Jr. of Buffalo Grove, Ill. and J. Thomas Chaney of Chicago, Ill., as well as eleven great-grandchildren.

Anna Lou is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Cecil, their daughter Connie Ann Thompson and her husband William F. Thompson of Madison, Wisc. and granddaughter Colette D. Carr of Portage, Wisc.


The family will meet with friends and former students from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Banks and Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Ill. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 at the funeral home, with a former student, Rev. Robert Wagner, officiating. Burial will be in the Harris Cemetery near Dallas City.
