FMHS club team 11th out of 29
CEDAR RAPIDS - The Fort Madison Spikers' 17-and-under volleyball team finished 11th place out of 29 teams in the Mary K. Meeker Highway 1 Challenge last Saturday at Cedar Rapids Washington High School.
The Fort Madison High School girls competed in the 17-and-under Silver Tournament (teams could choose the Silver or Gold Tournament).
The top four teams from each of two pools played in cross-pool play, with the winners advancing to a championship bracket at Mount Mercy College or a consolation bracket at Regis Middle School.
The Spikers ended pool play tied for fourth and advanced to cross-pool play with a playoff victory over GRJ Valkyries 25-18. The Spikers then lost to the Power Hitters 21-19, 21-17 and went to the consolation bracket.
There, Fort Madison finished fifth out of six teams, giving them 11th place overall.
“The girls started their day out a little rough,” Coach Julie Eckhardt said, “but made some great improvements in their play as the day went on. The whole purpose of the travel team is to get these girls playing during the off-season, which will improve their skills, build their confidence, and help them learn how to play as a team.
“They proved this with their fine efforts given Saturday in Cedar Rapids. Saturday was a long, full day of volleyball. Hopefully this has helped them prepare for their next tournament, which will be held April 5-6 at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant.
