Failure to file for non-profit status left the North Lee County Historical Society having to pay $9,700 some in back taxes on the original 1812 battlefield – and is prompting city officials to consider an audit of the group.

Whether to order an audit of the NLCHS will be discussed by the Fort Madison City Council and its regular 5:30 p.m. meeting today.

Ordering such an audit is a option since the city owns the Old Santa Fe Depot and CB&Q building and leases them to the NLCHS. Further, the NLCHS receives a significant portion of the city’s hotel/motel tax revenue...
