BURLINGTON – Emergency crews responded to a fertilizer spill that held up traffic for hours in Burlington on Monday.

At 4:48 p.m., the Burlington Fire Department was called to Roosevelt and West avenues after receiving a report of a drum that fell out of a vehicle and leaked an unknown substance onto the roadway, according to a press release from the Burlington Fire Department.

The Burlington Fire Hazmat team was involved in the identification, containment, and mitigation of the substance.

The vehicle the drum fell from was transporting approximately 500 gallons of green phosphate fertilizer, which is a non-hazardous substance.

But the substance is highly corrosive to metals.

Anyone who may have driven through or around the area at the time of the spill is advised by the Burlington Fire Department to wash their car.

Crews cleared the scene at 10:30 p.m.

The Burlington Streets Department, Burlington Police Department, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources all assisted in the response to the spill.
